Places To Go Skiing!

There are many places to go skiing in the Chugiak- Eagle River area.

For groomed trails, there are three main places that are close by.  It is helpful to check the link  below to see which areas have been groomed before you head out.  Check "Beach Lake Trail"s or "Other Trails" on the tab at the top for a report.  This is updated regularly when grooming is occuring.

Beach Lake Trails can be easily accessed from Chugiak High School parking lot or by driving a little farther down the road and turning left at the Beach Lake Chalet (17611 S Birchwood Loop Rd, Chugiak).  There are maps and the area has varying levels of difficulty.  Most of the loops are very well marked.  This is where the ski club meets for Junior Nordic Ski Sessions.

Mirror Lake Coyote Trails can be accessed from Mirror Lake Middle School (22901 Lake Hill Dr, Chugiak)

Eagle River High School (8701 Wolf Den Dr, Eagle River) also has about one mile of groomed trails adjacent to the school and across the street at Yosemite Drive, there is another short loop that is often groomed.

For other places to go skiing nearby, contact ski club members because conditions vary a lot.  Once the lakes have frozen, Beach Lake, Mirror Lake, Edmunds Lake and Eklutna Lake are often good places to get out to ski.  Sometimes conditions can be good from the Eagle River Nature Center or along Eagle River in various places, including Briggs Bridge access.  Just be cautious and aware of open water areas.

There are also many places to ski in Anchorage.  For groomed trails, go to the NSAA website link:

In the Mat-Su Valley, you can ski up at Independence Mine, Archangel Valley, or the Government Peak Recreation Area. The best link for grooming information in the Valley is:
